FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For Marketing: brianne@wildpackets.com For Sales: sales@wildpackets.com WILDPACKETS (fka AG GROUP, INC.) AND CISCO INT'L. BV ANNOUNCE 802.11 WIRELESS PACKET DECODING STRATEGY FOR ETHERPEEK AND CISCO AIRONET PC CARDSWALNUT CREEK, California and The Netherlands - September 21, 2000 WildPackets, formerly known as AG Group, Inc., a leading provider of software tools that deliver real-time, strategic information about an organization's network and Internet presence, and Cisco International BV, the EMEA division of the world-wide leader in networking for the Internet, announced today that they are working together to incorporate 802.11 wireless protocol decoding into WildPackets' award-winning EtherPeek packet analyzer. 802.11 comes with the ability to encrypt packets called WEP (Wireline Equivalent Privacy), which is shared key technology existing between a client and base station. If WEP is enabled, everything above the MAC layer should be unreadable. If WEP is disabled, the payload can be read. Cisco CCIEs want the ability to have 802.11b packet break-outs to prove functionality wherever the MAC/LLC layer records the fact that WEP is enabled. They also want to validate whether or not WEP is working if there's a connectivity problem. "Security is a huge issue in the wireless world." states Richard Buchanan, Cisco PS CENS Manager. "A PC could be stolen and a person could sit with the machine outside the building and have access to the network because Radio Frequencies bleed through. Our wireless customers are extremely concerned with potential security leaks, and want to address the issue before making large infrastructure investments or rearchitecting their networks around a wireless model. WildPackets has industry-leading tools that are licensed standards for our CCIEs and EMEA Professional Services and CENS Partners. We chose to work with them because they have the technical resources to insure our customers and engineers get the packet level information they require." WildPackets is developing the driver and decoder technology currently, and will release a version of EtherPeek that will detect and decode 802.11 wireless protocols later this year.
