802.11n

What is the big news about WildPackets and 802.11n?

  • The Wi-Fi Alliance has selected OmniPeek Professional as the official network analyzer for the test bed for 802.11n interoperability testing.
    • OmniPeek is the only analyzer to be selected for the test bed.
  • Support for 802.11n is a standard feature of OmniPeek 5.
  • OmniAnlysis is the first platform offering 802.11n support.

What 802.11n support does OmniPeek 5 provide?

OmniAnlysis Platform is the first and leading 802.11n Distributed Network Analysis Solution in the market.

Both OmniPeek and OmniEngine are capable of capturing, decoding, analyzing and displaying all 802.11n traffic. OmniPeek 5 works with many commercially available 802.11n wireless adapters to capture traffic, including management and data frames. It decodes all 11n-specific information, whether that information is in SISO beacons or 11n-specific packets. OmniPeek 5 detects and reports the presence of 802.11n APs and their capabilities, and compiles the results from all captured and decoded packets into detailed statistics and expert analyses. Displayed data follows the user-friendly and award-winning WildPackets UI elements, significantly reducing the learning curve of analyzing 802.11n traffic.

How is this different from the 802.11n support in OmniPeek 4.1?

OmniPeek 4.1 supported the decoding of 802.11n management frames. OmniPeek 5 supports capturing and decoding of all 802.11n traffic.

When will WildPackets’ 802.11n technology be available?

OmniPeek and OmniEnginefor 802.11n is available now.

Next-Generation Network Forensics

What is Network Forensics?

Network forensics is the capture, storage, and analysis of large amounts of network traffic for the purposes of conducting an investigation.

What types of investigations does Network Forensics support?

  • Network troubleshooting
  • Security attack analysis
  • HR and policy compliance (see the white paper by David Strom)
  • Transaction analysis
  • Application performance benchmarking

Can you provide examples of how customers are using Network Forensics today?

Yes.

Network troubleshooting: A major US automaker has deployed 5 Omnipliance network recorders in order to be able to troubleshoot network problems using retrospective analysis.

Transaction analysis: The merchant services division of a major financial services firm is using Omnipliance network recorders to capture network traffic as the ultimate audit trail for credit authorizations for online retailers.

What’s new in WildPackets’ Next-Generation Network Forensics.

  • We’ve re-engineered our data discovery technology 1) to increase performance and the size of captures we support, 2) to accelerate the display of the search results, and 3) to support more precise searches.
  • We’re introducing plug-ins that reconstruct email, Web, and IM traffic. These plug-ins are free for OmniPeek Enterprise customers.

Forensics Search will enable you to pinpoint the traffic that you need for complete analysis and the execution of:

  • Network troubleshooting
  • Security attack analysis
  • HR and policy compliance (see the white paper by David Strom)
  • Transaction analysis
  • Application performance benchmarking

OmniVirtual

What is OmniVirtual?

OmniVirtual is a lightweight service that runs on Windows-based virtual servers and enables data center engineers to see the “invisible traffic” inherent in virtual architectures and blade-server deployments. The service enables network traffic to be analyzed with WildPackets’ OmniPeek Analyzer.

What problem does OmniVirtual solve?

As enterprises virtualize their server operations, they run into the problem of “invisible traffic.”

Invisible traffic is traffic among virtual servers that never leaves a server blade or a server chassis. Because the traffic never leaves the chassis, there’s no easy way to tap it, and analyze it.

Virtualization is important, but it can be hard to do right. Data center engineers need to be able to see traffic moving to and from virtual servers in order to troubleshoot, optimize, and secure their virtual applications.

How is Omni Virtual different from other virtualization products?

Other products report MIB data—which OmniPeek can do, using one of our plug-ins—or WMI data, but provide no visibility into the traffic itself. But at some point, engineers need to be able to see the traffic. If a MIB or other statistical report indicates a problem, engineers will have to troubleshoot the problem by analyzing traffic. Omni Virtual provides the visibility engineers need into “invisible traffic” among virtual servers.

The Apdex Dashboard and Other Dashboard Enhancements

What is Apdex (Application Index)?

Apdex is an industry standard that provides a single metric—a number between 0 and 1—that represents the quality of service an application is delivering to its end users. Unlike low-level statistics such as server response time, Apdex measures application performance in terms of a task, which is a meaningful unit of work for an end user. By sampling task times for an application, Apdex is able to give an application a score that reflects whether its users are likely to be Satisfied, Tolerating, or Frustrated with the application’s performance.

Apdex was developed by an industry consortium, the Apdex Alliance (apdex.org). WildPackets is a founding member of the Apdex Alliance.

What is the Apdex Dashboard?

The Apdex dashboard is a graphical interface that provides a speedometer-like gauge that reports the Apdex score of an application. The gauge makes it easy even for non-technical users to tell at a glance how well applications are performing.

The dashboard complements other Apdex reporting views that have been included in OmniPeek since OmniPeek 4.

The Apdex visual provides a convenient reference for the performance of applications on your network from a user satisfaction perspective. Use the Apdex visual to locate troubled applications and drill down to the flows that make up the application traffic.
