LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Thank you to everyone who stopped by at Interop '09 last week. We enjoyed getting to meet you and hear about how you're managing and monitoring network performance. As requested, we've posted the slides from our mini-courses. Also, many of you participated in our informal network traffic survey. Check out the findings below.

If you missed us at Interop '09, and are going to be in San Francisco for Cisco Live! at the end of this month (June 29 - July 2), we'd love to see you.

Unable to make it out to San Francisco? Join us virtually on June 17th at 8:30 AM for an expanded version of our most popular mini-course, "Beyond NetFlow...The Need for Centralized Network Monitoring." Register today.

Sincerely,
Eden Signature
Eden Hensley
Director of Marketing Communication

SURVEY: NETWORK TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AND ANALYSIS

At Interop '09, we asked our mini-course attendees three questions:

  1. What types of networks do you manage?
  2. What is your average network throughput?
  3. What are your primary usages for network traffic analysis software?

For the most part, our findings mirrored trends reported elsewhere. However, one trend we were surprised to find was that very few respondents (7%) use network traffic analysis software for post-capture (forensic) analysis. The majority of respondents continue to use the software for either local (55%) or distributed (41%) real-time troubleshooting and analysis.

Read more about what we found.

Like to participate in our survey? Tell us about your network and how you're using network traffic analysis software. If you'd like to be entered into a drawing for the latest iPod Touch (drawing to be held 6/19/2009 and winner announced in the July Peeks newsletter).

Congrats to Interop's winner, Chris Gangwish of Boulder, CO.

ARTICLE: NO LONGER YOUR PARENTS' PROTOCOL ANALYZER!

While troubleshooting is one of the core competencies of a protocol analyzer, by using it primarily in this way, network engineers might be missing out on the advantages of triggering, alarming, and reporting functionality. Jim Thor walks you through a comparison of a protocol analyzer with some of the other technologies available for managing your network and discusses the use of a protocol analyzer in Infrastructure Analysis. Product Tips and Tricks

Putting a Hex on Address Range Filters
By Jeff Trawick, WildPackets Professional Services

In most cases when we build address filters, we look for all traffic to and from a specific address, or pair of addresses. At times we want all the traffic for a given subnet or MAC OUI, so OmniPeek allows address filters with asterisk (*) wildcards. We can also use "slash" notation to specify subnets (e.g. 10.10.7.0/24 for a 24-bit subnet mask). Yet these methods aren’t always specific enough to filter for a particular set of nodes.
