Special Topics: Department of Defense Wireless Directive 8100.2

In April 2004, the Department of Defense (DoD) adopted Wireless Directive 8100.2. This directive establishes security policies for the use of commercial wireless devices, services, and technologies in the DoD Global Information Grid (GIG). The directive mandates the use of authentication and strong encryption for securing wireless traffic. It also calls for the use of intrusion detection technologies in order to detect and defeat security attacks and unauthorized use of the network.

This directive became effective on April 14, 2004, and applies to all DoD organizations and personnel, as well as DoD contractors, visitors that enter DoD facilities, and anyone who has access to DoD information
