Analyzing FTP data transfers

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a very popular IP-based application and FTP commands (and HTTP commands for that matter) are easy to interpret in packets captured by a protocol analyzer. This is because they appear inside the packet as plain-text ASCII just as users enters them (either via a command-based FTP application or a GUI-based FTP program emulating user commands). Once a data transfer is underway, it's pure TCP until completion. Therefore, understanding how to analyze TCP flow control and error recovery is extremely valuable when analyzing FTP (as well as HTTP) data transfers. Also keep in mind that FTP commands use TCP port 21 whereas data uses TCP port 20.

Tip of the Month
Time to ‘Select’
This month I’m going to address the need of being able to actively select certain packets from an active capture. This occurs when you have an active capture running, which you cannot stop for whatever reason, but you wish to apply a filter to it.
