Amazon

Author: Clifford Stoll

ISBN: 0-671-72688-9

Target Audience: All Levels

General Topic: Hacking History & Trivia / Behind the Scenes of Government Security Agencies

Why We Like It: Engrossing account of how a 75-cent accounting error lead to the downfall of a Soviet spy-ring, all through the use of computers and the ARPANET/MILNET. Easily one of the most interesting books on cyber-espionage, this book chronicles the authors three year crusade to get someone, anyone in the various government security agencies to listen to his warnings that their networks were wide open and being systematically looted of classified information. He then covers how the result of his efforts are how many of the "unusual" security procedures/situations we now deal with day-to-day were developed. From a historical perspective, this book provides a festinating glimpse into the total lack of Federal Security policy that was the norm for the 1980's - early 90's. At the time, no one thought it could be done, so why bother with procedures and deciding who was responsible for what aspects of National Computer security. From an adventure perspective, it describes the incredible lengths one individual went to trap, expose and help convict the person know as "Hunter".<
