The Ring Purge OperationThe term ring purge can refer to two things: It can refer to the act of an Active Monitor sending a Ring Purge frame around a Token Ring, and it can refer to the actual frame that is sent out by an Active Monitor during a ring purge operation. The purpose of a ring purge operation is to reset the ring to a known state. Any station receiving a Ring Purge frame immediately stops whatever it is doing, resets its timers, and enters Bit Repeat Mode. When an AM receives its own Ring Purge frame back, it knows that every station on the ring is now in Bit Repeat Mode, and is waiting for a Token. Ring Purges are generally sent out after a recovery operation, such as monitor contention, has occurred and immediately before the generation of a new Token by the AM. |
