FAQs
Can I configure PacketGrabber to automatically email me the files it captures?
Yes! PacketGrabber can be configured to automatically email, ftp, or perform
a command line operation. After capturing a file (or multiple files) and
stopping, the send options can be invoked. You can configure the send option
in PacketGrabber to automatically email the file(s) back to you. Of course,
the remote location must have a viable link to your email server and there are
other caveats.
- First, send the PacketGrabber application to your remote location.
- Next, PacketGrabber needs to be installed on a machine at the remote location.
- Then, create a new AutoCapture (*.wac) file. Customize the send
options by entering: the mail server's address, your address, the
sender's address, and, if desired, a subject line.
- After the remote location has PacketGrabber installed, send your *.wac file.
- Finally, download the *.wac file to the PacketGrabber machine, then
double-click on the *.wac file. PacketGrabber will start, capture the
traffic, stop, then email the file or files directly to you. Good luck!
I am trying to launch PacketGrabber, but I get the error message: "Ordinal 57 could not be located in the dynamic link library ATL.DLL". What is wrong?
The missing DLL is actually part of Internet Explorer 6, so the fix is to upgrade the version of IE on your computer. Version 6 of IE can be downloaded from Microsoft's website.
I set up PacketGrabber to email me the trace file. However, I haven't received anything in my email. Why isn't my PacketGrabber sending my trace file?
This problem may have multiple causes. First, check that email is working
properly for your network. If you are certain that all the email options are
configured correctly, make sure your capture will stop. PacketGrabber send
options will only occur when the capture stops. If you have a continuous capture,
it will continue to grab packets and will never initiate the email. You must
set up a stop trigger, manually stop the capture, or turn off the continuous
capture option.
What hardware is supported by PacketGrabber?
PacketGrabber will run with an NDIS 3 or higher compatible Ethernet or Fast
Ethernet promiscuous mode network adapter. Promiscuous mode is the ability
to have EtherPeek take over the driver and put it into a mode that will allow
it to passively capture all packets on an Ethernet wire, regardless of the
address to which they are being sent/received.
For example, we are compatible with adapters from 3Com, Intel, Xircom, SMC,
and many others.
PacketGrabber uses the same technology as EtherPeek. For information about
error capture, please see our EtherPeek error capture page: http://www.wildpackets.com/product_support/omnipeek/error_capture
What decodes are supported by PacketGrabber?
PacketGrabber is only a trace file collection tool. Therefore, to decode
and analyze the packets gathered by PacketGrabber, you must open them in either
EtherPeek or EtherPeek NX.

Product Tips and Tricks
Intra-Chassis Virtualization Capture and AnalysisIn today's networks, many organizations have moved heavily towards using virtualization solutions to alleviate many headaches associated to stand-alone systems, like the overhead of management, power efficiency, physical space, and overall costs. But with that move from physical to virtual, one thing that often gets somewhat overlooked is the network traffic, especially the traffic between those machines that you just put in a virtual environment. After all, you just eliminated virtually all network latency! What is happening in there?!
