Ethernet

OmniPeek will run with a NDIS 3 or higher compatible Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, or Gigabit promiscuous mode network adapter. Promiscuous mode is the ability to have OmniPeek take over the driver and put it into a mode that will allow it to passively capture all packets on an Ethernet wire, regardless of the address to which they are being sent/received.

For example, we are compatible with adapters from 3Com, Intel, Xircom, SMC, and many others.

Full-Duplex Gigabit

The OmniAdapter is a PCI-X card that supports up to 2 full-duplex or 4 half-duplex connections. Taking advantage of a PCI-X bus that clocks up to 133 MHz, the OmniAdapter provides high-performance connectivity for monitoring and troubleshooting Gigabit networks. OmniAdapter can be configured during manufacturing to support multiple configurations of SX, LX, ZX or copper (Ethernet).

OmniAdapter is available in 4 different configurations:

  • 4 ports of SFP cages
  • 4 ports of RJ45 Ethernet
  • 2 RJ45 Ethernet and 2 SFP cages
  • 1000Base-SX or 1000Base-LX Optical Ethernet or 1000Base-T Ethernet using modular transceivers

For more information about OmniAdapter, please visit the OmniAdapters Product Page.

10 Gigabit:

WildPackets’ OmniAdapter 10G is a high performance, full-duplex 10 Gigabit Network Analyzer Card with 2x10 Gbit/s optical interfaces that has been optimized for monitoring and troubleshooting traffic on 10 Gigabit Ethernet network. The two-port, OmniAdapter 10G provides hardware accelerated packet tracing and dynamically configurable filtering together with high precision timestamping. The network adapter is based on the industry standard PCI-X interface and available with 1x850nm MFF XFP or; 1x1310nm SMF XFP optical transceivers with LC connectors.

One-port, OmniAdapter 10G is also supported by WildPackets’ OmniPeek Product Family. It’s available in PCI-X or PCI-E with 1x850nm MFF XFP or; 1x1310nm SMF XFP optical transceivers with LC connectors.

WildPackets also offers Intel Pro/10GbE adapter cards to capture 10 Gigabit traffic. The Intel Pro/10GbE cards are an excellent, cost-effective solution for those who want to connect to SPAN or mirror ports.

They are available in 3 different configurations:

  • Intel® PRO/10GbE CX4 Server Adapter : 64-bit PCI-X interface running up to 133 MHz with 10GbE-over-copper connection.
  • Intel® PRO/10GbE SR Server Adapter : - 64-bit PCI-X interface running up to 133 MHz with 10 Gigabit Multi-mode Fiber Server Connection.
  • Intel® PRO/10GbE LR Server Adapter : 64-bit PCI-X interface running up to 133 MHz with 10 Gigabit Single-mode Fiber Server Connection.

WAN

OmniPeek provides support for PCMCIA T1/E1 (WAC PCMCIA T1/E1).

The WAC PCMCIA T1/E1 is a Type 2 PCMCIA card that fits in any laptop or portable computer with PCMCIA support. It captures at line rate full-duplex T1/E1 speeds.

For more information WAC PCMCIA T1/E1, please visit the WAC Product Page.

Wireless

For wireless packet capture, OmniPeek requires the installation of a special driver corresponding to the supported wireless network adapter. WildPackets has tested Marvell-based, Atheros-based and Intel Centrino 3945-based cards for wireless capture. Other wireless cards may work with this version to the same degree that they worked in prior versions; however, these cards are not recommended. For more information and to download wireless drivers, please visit: OmniPeek Enterprise Wireless Drivers Page.

Tip of the Month
Don’t Lose The Tags
WildPackets’ Technical Support Team regularly receives questions about capturing VLAN (Virtual LAN) tags in packets. Some customers report that they cannot see VLAN tags when capturing packets from their switches. The tags are usually missing because the capture configuration or the location of OmniPeek (or Omni Engine) is incorrect. So, this tip is aimed at understanding VLAN tags and how they can be captured using OmniPeek Product Family.
